Nature-based solutions in Latin America, Europe and North Rhine-Westphalia – An international exchange on strategies, implementation and lessons learnt

Nature-based solutions (NBS) such as green-blue infrastructure (GBI) are key to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises globally, and locally. NBS support biodiversity and climate adaptation whilst providing a wide range of other benefits such as recreation, health and sense of community. However, approaches to planning and implementing NBS differ locally considering respective frame conditions.

The CONEXUS project funded by the EU brings Latin American and European perspectives together to strengthen international cooperation on NBS and ecosystem services by featuring NBS life-labs, which share common challenges and ambitions to implement place-based NBS and nature-based thinking. Regions and cities in North Rhine-Westphalia have a long tradition in developing GBI and NBS at various scales alongside their need to foster new efforts as the most highly densely populated federal state of Germany facing severe impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The intention of the workshop, initialised by MUNV NRW as a project partner in CONEXUS, is to enable exchange between the NBS stakeholders from CONEXUS and North Rhine-Westphalia on their strategies and local practices for planning and implementation of NBS and GBI and to create take aways for both sides.
